How to Create Your Own Plastic Bottle Planters

by Cheryl Cook 01/10/2022

People who want to live a sustainable lifestyle at home often begin by minimizing the amount of plastic that they purchase and use. For the plastic products in the home, there are many ways to recycle or even upcycle it to prevent it from going into a landfill. One creative way to reuse old plastic materials is to create plastic bottle planters. Here's everything you need to know about this craft:

Supplies You Will Need for a Plastic Bottle Planter

You won't need much to create your own plastic bottle planter. In fact, you likely already have many of these supplies on hand. This is what you will need to get started:

      • An old plastic bottle that you have cleaned thoroughly
    • Acrylic paint
    • Scissors, paint brushes and a hole punch
    • Twine
    • A small plant, potting soil and a shovel for planting

4 Steps to Create Your Own Plastic Bottle Planter

Not only does this craft require minimal supplies, but it also only takes a few steps to complete. These are the four steps that you need to follow to finish your plastic bottle planter:

    1. Use scissors to cut your plastic bottle down to the right size. In most cases, you can cut it in half and have a suitable planter for your preferred plant.
    2. After you have sized your planter accordingly, you can paint it. Whether you opt for a traditional terra cotta color or you prefer to create a vibrant masterpiece, you will surely have a beautiful product in the end. This is your chance to let your creativity shine.
    3. Once the paint is dry, you will use the hole punch to create holes in the sides of the planter. Use the twine to create a hanging planter.
    4. Finally, you are ready to plant your favorite flower or succulent in the planter. Fill it with potting soil, and dig a small hole that will house the plant. Make sure to give your plant a drink of water after you repot it, as this will ensure that it takes to its new home.

Once you have finished planting, you are ready to display your new plastic bottle planter. Depending on the plant you chose, you can hang it indoors or outdoors.

Why Should You Design Your Own Plastic Bottle Planter?

By putting an old plastic bottle to use in your home, you are eliminating the risk that this bottle will not be properly recycled, and you are preventing it from ending up in the trash. In addition, you also are creating an upcycled project with a natural twist. This plastic bottle planter will hold your favorite plant and display it for anyone who comes into your home or yard, allowing you to showcase your commitment to preserving the environment in a variety of ways.
